    In situ thermal remediation (ISTR) has gained wide acceptance over the last 20 years. It is now considered an accepted contaminant source reduction technology with a high degree of certainty for achieving remedial objectives. The objective of the Volatile Organic Compounds in Non-arid Soils Integrated Demonstration at the Savannah River Site is to evaluate innovative remediation, characterization, and monitoring systems to facilitate restoration of contaminated sites.

    Electrical resistance heating has been demonstrated to enhance removal of VOCs and SVOCs in unsaturated clay-rich soils. It has also been used to enhance removal of petroleum compounds.
