A two-year longitudinal study was conducted to assess the reproductive and lactation performances of smallholder crossbred dairy cattle in Fitche, central Ethiopia. Twenty-four smallholder dairy farms were monitored and data on reproductive, breeding, lactation and management aspects of crossbred dairy cows (n = 69) were collected and analysed. . Seventy-two cows were selected for an on-farm study on the effect of feed supplementation before calving on milk production, ovarian activity and calf growth of Holstein, indigenous Red Fulani cows and their crosses. Pre-partum feed supplementation was done using cotton seed cake (80 %), maize (18 %), bone meal (1 %) and kitchen salt (1 % NaCl).Cited by: 1.
Two experiments were performed to evaluate the reproductive performance of zebu beef cows treated with different doses of eCG at the end of a progesterone (P4)/estrogen based protocol for timed artificial insemination (TAI). At the beginning of the experiment (November), cows had a post-partum period (DPP) of ± days.

Much depends upon genetic constitution of an animal although several factors interplay to govern the onset of postpartum ovarian activity. South Asian zebu cattle have much longer service period when compared with other exotic or crossbred cattle. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of pre and post-partum concentrate supplementation on milk yield, milk composition and reproductive performance of crossbred dairy cows.
Forty eight cows were involved in the study, and were divided into three groups according to concentrate supplementation. Two commercial beef herds of zebu cattle were visited each month for 2 yr; cows that had been inseminated >40 days previously and cows that had calved >40 days previously were examined rectally.
Oestrus synchronization was carried out on one farm, with Gir cattle, using PGF2α or slow-release prostagen devices, but not on the other farm (Indo-Brazilian cattle).Cited by: 1. Then, if dietary fat does not alter the energy status of dairy cows, reproductive response results more from the supply of some fatty acids, than from the effect of the energy supply per se (Staples et al.,Williams & Amstaldem, ).

The late resumption of postpartum ovarian activity in Zebu cattle is seen as a major hurdle for achieving a calving interval between 12 months and 14 months .An early review on the subject pointed to the two primary causes for the delay in the onset of ovarian activity following parturition: one was the effect of suckling, and the other, the loss of body weight even prior to calving .Cited by: 1.
